I remember in 10th grade writing a poem titled, "The Mood I'm In." In this poem I described different scenerios, and whether I was in some kind of predicament myself, or had caused ill to someone else, in each verse I'd abdicate my responsibility in it by saying, "That's just the mood I'm in."
The reason this poem has stuck out in my mind through all these years is because of what my 10th grade English teacher - who I adored! - said to me after she read it.... "But, Becky, you have control over your moods. They're not an excuse."
In my youthful naivety, I had no clue what she meant. But now, 36 years later, I understand.
Early on my spiritual path I used to say, "Attitude is everything." But in the past few years, studying and learning more about how our mind works, I've gone deeper.
Yes, attitude is important. But our mindset - our state of mind - is what drives the attitude. And this mind state (or mood) is not something that just "happens" to us. It's an internal state of affairs. And WE have the power to change it.... or not.
In this month's article, I talk about how mindsets are like "internal programming." Yes, they can be changed. But first you have to realize you're in one. I offer the "HALT" rule of thumb as a first step in becoming more aware.

HALT! Check Your Mindset
The term "mindset" refers to your state of mind, your attitude, your "mood". Sometimes it's referred to as "state" for short.
We go through various states of mind every day. We learn intuitively which mindset works best. For example, the mindset needed for sleeping is very different than that required for giving a speech. Going to sleep requires being in a relaxed, calm, meditative state. Giving a speech needs an active, focused, alert state.
In addition, each state of mind has its own associated thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and behaviors. It acts like an internal software program with specific guidelines and filters that determine what we perceive, and then how we process the information perceived.
For example, think about the last time you were in a sad, depressed state. How did you hold your body? What thoughts were going through your mind? What behaviors were you involved in?
Most likely, your body was slumped and your head was down. You may have even let out a few heavy sighs. Your mind was probably filled with thoughts that confirmed how bad things were. And these thoughts may even have been accompanied by feelings of how things would never get any better. Plus, it's a good bet that you were trapped in inertia as well - or you at least were finding it hard to get moving or engage in any kind of productive activity.
Now, let's contrast that with the last time you were happy or excited about something. How did you hold your body in this state? What thoughts were going through your mind? What was your behavior like?
In this more positive state, odds are that your body was poised, shoulders back, head up. You were filled with energy and ready for action. You may have even had a hard time keeping still! And I bet your mind was centered on happy, expectant thoughts and you were filled with feelings of self-worth and a sense of well-being.
In both of these examples, the body and mind were in harmony with each other - each reflecting off the other. And each mind-body state had it's own "programmed" way of thinking, feeling, and being.
This is good news and bad news.
The good news is that when you harness the power of this natural mind-body connection, it can be a great tool for helping you move forward, propelling you toward your dreams and goals. When you don't, it can keep you stuck and frustrated, wondering why you can't seem to reach the success you desire, and perhaps even feeling like the whole world is against you.
The best news is that...... you can change your state of mind.
The first step is being aware that you're in a particular state - or mood.
I'll be writing more about this topic, but for now, here are four common mindsets to become aware of, plus a good rule-of-thumb to go by....
Take a HALT - avoid making any major decisions when you're feeling Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired.
When you're hungry or angry, patience runs thin and tolerance levels are at an all-time low. And depending on the severity, anything and everything may have a tendency to push-your-buttons. The fight or flight response and other subconscious triggers can easily dictate your actions and your thought processes.
When you're feeling lonely, it's typically "pity-party city" and everyone else is to blame. Thoughts and feelings are generally centered around some level of "poor me." Definitely not a good state for moving forward!
When you're tired - physically or mentally - no matter how hard you may try, the ol' brain just doesn't want to work. In addition, it's very easy to get into "poor me" and other negative, down-hill-slide thought/feeling traps.
The truth is, emotions hijack the logical side of the brain. (It's not your fault, it's just part of how the mind works.) Your job is to recognize the mindset and work with it, instead of against it. Realizing you're in a high emotionally charged mind state and trying to make an important decision anyway nearly always guarantees you're going to set yourself up for an upset.
Decision making works best when you have access to both sides of the brain - logical and feeling. So practice noticing what mindsets you're in as you go through the day. If you find yourself in a hungry, angry, lonely, or tired state, better to hold off, sleep on it, and decide later.
