Background Info from CD Insert:
As a child, my dad would often join me at the piano with his guitar or harmonica and
we’d play our favorite hymns together. Those were always special times to me. After
Thanksgiving dinner a few years back, he asked me to play some hymns for him. As I
played, he sat by the piano, listening and periodically wiping his eyes. Before that point,
I never realized how much my playing meant to him. Remembering our hymn-playing
sessions years ago, I understood that day, that those sessions meant a lot to him also.
As a way of commemorating those special times, I recorded these hymns as a Father’s Day
present for my dad. I asked the Sanctuary Choir at Trinity United Methodist Church to help
me choose hymns by writing their favorites on index cards. Then at the recording session,
I grouped their selections together and sat down to play, letting the spirit move.
Re-listening to these improvisations a few months ago, I realized that each medley feels like
you’re going on a journey – just like life, you never know what you’ll get or what will come
along. You decide a direction and start out, but there are bumps and unexpected turns
along the way. Sometimes everything turns out perfectly. Sometimes you stumble and fall,
but you keep going – sometimes faking it until you make it, sometimes just faking it until
you figure out you’ve gone down a dead end road. At times, you can turn those bumps or“oop’s” into something creative or useful. Sometimes this works out well, other times it
doesn’t turn out quite how you thought it might…. But life goes on – the beat goes on. And
as the journey of life continues, you carry your light – your talent, your dreams, your
spirit, your Divine Essence – with you with confidence, knowing that this light is your gift
from God, and your unique gift to the world. Let it shine!
